SW | Protest: Stories Of Resistance - Wednesday 27 Sept

DAVID CONSTANTINE AND KIT DE WAAL WITH CATHY GALVIN

Comma Press, Manchester’s pioneering short form publisher, reflects on our cantankerous times with an anthology looking at British protest down the ages. Two contributors chose to focus on moments when ordinary citizens found they could stand aside no longer as racism held sway. David Constantine is a prize-winning poet, translator and short story writer; ‘Rivers of Blood’ depicts the Oxford march springing from Powell’s eponymous speech. Kit de Waal’s story ‘Exterior Paint’ takes place during the Smethwick campaign; her short fiction has won numerous prizes, while her debut novel My Name is Leon - described as “a visceral story of racial and social injustice” by the Guardian - won the Kerry Group Irish Book of the Year 2017. Written in conjunction with historians and eyewitnesses, these are stories sprung from fact, and all the more powerful for it. Chaired by Cathy Galvin, poet, editor and founder of the Word Factory.
