SW | Stories Of Britishness - Friday 29 Sept
SALENA GODDEN AND NIKESH SHUKLA WITH AFUA HIRSCH
What stories do we tell ourselves, our family, officials and monitoring forms, about who we are and where we come from? Issues of nationality, identity and immigration have rarely been more prominent in public discourse, nor more loaded. Award-winning writer Nikesh Shukla commissioned 21 British BAME writers to write about what it means to be an immigrant in today’s UK, with effervescent results. The resulting anthology, The Good Immigrant is “a powerful antidote to generalisation and lazy thinking” (The Spectator). Nikesh is joined by contributor Salena Godden, one of the UK’s foremost spoken word artists and author of childhood memoir Springfield Road. They will be reading and talking with writer, broadcaster and barrister Afua Hirsch, whose first book Brit(ish), exploring Britishness and identity, is out next year.
