OLIVE SENIOR, ANTHONY JOSEPH, HELEN KLONARIS AND NICHOLAS LAUGHLIN

In this special event we are thrilled to bring you a taste of the extraordinary writing coming out of the Caribbean region today.

Jamaican author Olive Senior has written has written seventeen books of fiction, poetry and non-fiction, including four short story collections. Her first, Summer Lightning, won the Commonwealth Writers Prize in 1987, and her most recent, The Pain Tree, won the 2015 OCM Bocas Prize for Literature. In 2004 she was awarded the Gold Medal of the Institute of Jamaica. She has travelled extensively and has now settled in Toronto,

Anthony Joseph is a Trinidadian poet, novelist, musician and lecturer described as ‘the leader of the black avant-garde in Britain’. His written work and performance occupies a space between surrealism, Jazz and the rhythms of Caribbean speech and music. He is the author of four poetry collections and a novel The African Origins of UFOs.

Helen Klonaris is our 2017 British Council International Writer in Residence at Small Wonder. A Bahamian writer, performer, and teacher who lives between the Bay Area, California and Nassau, Bahamas, her debut collection of stories If I Had the Wings, was published this year.

Nicholas Laughlin, who will host as well as read from his acclaimed poetry collection The Strange Years of My Life, is programme director of the Bocas Lit Fest, Trinidad and Tobago’s annual literature festival, and editor of The Caribbean Review of Books. He is also co-director of the contemporary art space Alice Yard.

Caribbean flavoured music and refreshments will make this a night of words and rhythms to remember!
