FAQs / Help

What happens when I buy a ticket online?

On completion of your order, you will be emailed an e-Ticket containing a barcode and booking reference number.  Please present this ticket on arrival at the Charleston Shop, or if you don’t have a printer, simply make a note of the Booking Reference Number or show us your booking on your phone or tablet.  Please note you can buy a ticket online up to midnight the day before you intend to visit.

What if I can't print my ticket?

You will be emailed an order confirmation that will include your unique Booking Reference Number and a barcode that also contains this number. You may present us with these details on your phone or tablet, or make a note of this number and bring it with you when you visit Charleston in place of a ticket. We suggest printing out the email where possible as this will contain a barcode which will grant you quicker access.

Can I visit today, there are no tickets available online?

Tickets for each day are available online until midnight the day before.

Subject to availability, tickets can be purchased on the day from the Charleston Shop.  To avoid waiting for your house entry we strongly recommend purchasing your tickets in advance online where possible.

If you visit without pre-booking and experience a delay in your entry time due to limited ticket availability, there is plenty to do at Charleston, including visiting the Garden, watching an introductory DVD, and enjoying our cafe and shop.  Please see here for even more activities you can enjoy while visiting us, including walking maps and details of nearby attractions.

Please check our opening days and times here before visiting.

How do I get to Charleston?

Charleston is clearly signposted off the A27.  Please be aware that some Sat Navs may misdirect you.  We recommend you consult our car and public transport directions here.

Can I park my car at Charleston?

There is plenty of free parking at Charleston.  For accessible parking, please follow the signs through from the main car park.  Accessible parking spaces are sign-posted close to the House.

What time should I arrive?

You should arrive at least 20 minutes before your tour, entry time or event starts.  All tours and events start promptly and unfortunately we cannot wait for late arrivals.

Where should I go when I arrive?

When you arrive please check-in at the Charleston Shop using your e-ticket or booking reference number. Please bring proof of eligibility for any concession tickets.

What are the best days to visit for families with children?

Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays are great days to visit with children.  On these days you are free to explore the house at your own pace, talk freely as a family and engage with our knowledgeable and friendly volunteer stewards.  Free art activities are available on selected Sundays.  Guided tours (Wed-Sat) are not recommended for young children.

What concessions do you offer?

For House entry, we offer concessions for over 65s, green travellers (those travelling by public transport, on foot or by bike), students and those receiving benefits (eg. jobseekers or disability allowance).  Proof of eligibility is required.

We offer discounted entry for those requiring accessible tickets.  Disabled ticket holders may bring a free companion.

Art Fund members receive a 50% discount on standard Charleston Tours and can visit for free on self-guided Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays. We do not offer Art Fund discounts on extended tours.

Children aged 6 – 18 receive discounted entry, children under 6 are free.

Friends of Charleston are free.

Is there wheelchair user access?

The ground floor of the House is fully accessible, but access to the first floor is via steep stairs with a handrail on the left side.

All other amenities are fully accessible with ramped entrances.  Assistance dogs are welcome.  Charleston is a rural site and the ground can be uneven.  Please see our website access page for further information, or if you have any concerns or questions we welcome your telephone call on 01323 811 626.

Do you offer refunds?

All tickets are non-refundable.

Can I bring my dog?

Assistance dogs only are allowed at Charleston.  No other dogs are allowed in the House, Gardens, shop or cafe.

Where can I eat?

Our cafe serves hot and cold drinks, light lunches and delicious cakes.  We use locally sourced seasonal ingredients and produce from the Charleston garden.  There is also a designated picnic area with a small number of picnic benches; picnics are not allowed within the garden.
